Personal-aesthetic, advanced contemporary collection for SS2021:
Un-basic essentials for new-normal living.
Considering increased time spent indoors during 2020; my 2021 collection contemplates 3 mindsets: the first - creating and improving a smaller personal worldview. The home as sanctuary, but also as setting for all aspects of our lives, requiring aspects to feel inspiring and optimistic.
An essentialist canvas provides ample spatial clarity for personal artistic touches and joyful splashes of color. Home as a physical manifestation of mindset. A comforting and rejuvenating space.
After extended forced distancing, we yearn for human connection and physical touch. This collection mindset focuses on a return to special, with a high standard of functionality. A nostalgic yearning for novelty, hand-crafted tactility and artful scale.
In considering the merchandising architecture of this collection, I propose un-basic basics mixed with playful, one-of-a-kind pieces create a strong wardrobe foundation with room to play.
With 2020 stay-home mandates still fresh in mind and potential ongoing 2021 shelter-in-place orders to come, an escapist streak emerges. We will be hungry for spontaneity, physical touch, and togetherness; celebrating life, health and each other after extended distance and hardship.
A desire to be free builds and builds- to act without consideration and a wistfulness for wilder days. A lust for social gathering, skin-to-skin contact and sweaty dance floor de-layering. We look to the 70s- bygone days of disco and immense social change in the face of difficult economic circumstances.
Color + Pattern Mindset - Cautiously optimistic.
Florals as a symbol for the perennial renewal and cycle of life, but slightly cynical and skewed with acidic yellow-greens and dizzying scales. Youthful cut & paste florals in Delft blues and hand-painted paint daub abstracts provide comfort and calm.
Arresting corals and cautious yellow-orange clash against soothing blues.
Menswear and 60s classics such as stripes, seersuckers and gingham offer a nostalgic balm but are mixed and rendered in slightly jarring combinations.
First group of sketches, focusing on stories of tying and versatility, mix-and-clash panelling, and angularity.
Proportions are slightly oversized and breezy, an ease away from the body and drawing from menswear and utilitarian classics.
